Un titre acoustique (seulement Thom au piano) inauguré
à Amsterdam le 13 juin
1999, pour le Tibetan Freedom Concert. Un tempo lent, comme sur How
I Made My Millions, et répétitif, a bercé le début
de la performance conjointe de Thom et Jon. Lors de cette première performance, la première phrase était juste I jumped in the river. Depuis, le groupe l'a jouée
au complet et a donc rajouté une guitare, la batterie et la basse.
Confirmé sur Kid A par
Colin en juin 2000, elle n'y était finalement pas.

Je compose de moins en moins à la guitare.
Bon, Pyramid Song je l'ai trouvée au piano. Il y a très peu de
guitare, bien que Jonny en joue encore beaucoup.

À quoi le titre fait-il référence ?

Jonny a insisté pour le choisir, je l'ai
accepté parce que musicalement, tout est en triangle. Les accords, le
rythme... Et puis les pyramides, l'Égypte, tout ça me fascine.
Je sais que c'est embarassant, mais...
Ces pyramides, vous les avez vues ?
Thom
Non... Oh quoique... si, je les ai vues. C'est intéressant,
j'avais oublié. Il y a deux ans, nous étions sur la route. Pendant
une heure, j'en ai vues, là. (il met la main autour de sa tête),
juste devant mes yeux. Les gens me parlaient, personne ne me croyait. Nigel
m'a parlé d'une ville, européenne, je crois, toute la ville a
déclaré avoir vu des pyramides voler au-dessus de la mer (hilare).
Il m'a dit que j'étais peut-être un messie. Je lui ai répondu
qu'il avait probablement raison, puis je suis allé prendre une douche
froide. Tu ne me crois pas ?
Difficilement. Les extraterrestes, vous y croyez aussi ?

(rires, rugissements) Selon moi, les gens
y ont toujours cru, ont toujours été visités. Au Moyen
Âge, ils voyaint des anges. Seuls les noms changent. Mon histoire de pyramides
aussi, d'ailleurs, est difficile à croire.

m'ont vraiment impressionné.

Pyramid Song fut avant Egyptian Song et encore
avant, pour les fans, Nothing To Fear. Il faut connaître le premier
live qui est, à mon avis, étourdissant. Cette chanson fut désignée
par le groupe pour être le premier single d'Amnesiac et le premier
single depuis la période OK Computer.
Le clip est somptueux, entièrement en 3D. Malheureusement, comme les
succès de Radiohead ne sont que rarement appuyés par les médias
télés courants, il passe quelquefois et seules les intégrales
de MCM ou quelques émissions ici et là nous permettent
de le visionner. (Flavien)

plays bass and it sounds pretty much finished. i haven't really been involved
in this song so when i hear it i think i'm able to be fairly objective about
it.........it has the feel of one of the tracks on the last mark hollis album
and it is definitely one of the highlights so far. [...]

- La chanson est l'opposée totale de Walk Like An Egyptian,
tant au niveau du rythme, et de la musique que des paroles. Mais il est toujours
amusant de se souvenir des Bangles (et d'Eternal Flame, leur plus grand
tube).
Plus sérieusement, le bateau à rame qui emmène les gens
au paradis est, selon la mythologie gréco-romaine, conduit sur le Styx,
dont les eaux rendent invulnérable, par Charon, Nocher des Enfers,
moyennant une obole. La mère d'Achille y a trempé son
rejeton en le tenant par le talon, d'où son point faible.
Il existe un mythe similaire dans l'Ancienne Égypte, mais chaque Pharaon
devait venir avec sa barque (d'où le fait de l'enterrer avec lui).
C'est le Nil qu'il traverse symboliquement, de la rive droite (où sont
les temples) à la rive gauche (où sont les tombeaux), suivant
le parcours du Soleil d'est en ouest.
