...the song, Creep was big, but Radiohead
wasn't...
Paul Q Kolderie
And the one day in rehearsal, they burst into this
other song, which I guess they'd just written. When they finished it, Thom mumbled
something like, "That's our Scott Walker song"... except I thought he said "That's
a Scott Walker song". Now I was pretty familiar with Scott Walker, but
Jeez, there's a lot of albums and I could have missed something! We walked out
of the rehearsal that night and Sean said, "Too bad their best song's a cover.
Jonny played the piano at the end of the song and it was gorgeous. Everyone
who heard Creep just started going insane. So that's what got us the
job doing the album.
The Air That I Breathe, intentionnellement (voyez
là pour les paroles).
Jonny
What happened was, we wrote Creep, and
the middle eighth just had... my guitar playing a tune. And Ed stopped [us]
and said, 'This is the same chord sequence as that Hollies song', and then sang
it. So Thom copied it. It was funny to us in a way, sort of feeding something
like that into [it]. It's a bit of change.
Creep is saying "I wanna be abhorred", isn't it?
Thom
Yeah, definitely... It's about... [pause] It's about
sympathy... [longer pause] This is all very hard. If, erm... Yeah I suppose.
Mmmm... [very long pause] As soon as I say this, everyone will take the piss...
It's just, I think... [pause for several centuries] Part of me is always looking
for someone to turn around, buy me a drink, give me a hug and say it's all right.
Thom
...Because i just go off on one. For days I can't
talk to people. And it shocks me because I'm still doing it. I want to be alone
and I want people to notice me - both at the same time. I can't help it. There's
this book, Famished Road, where the main character has these forces
following him around and pulling him about - I feel like that. It sounds really
tossy, this. If I was a painter, it would be like, 'wow! that's wonderful!'
but this is pop and in pop you're not meant to say things like this.
Titre
'chanson à la con' ('that Creep song').
Ils ont écrit My Iron Lung

version date d'environ 1985...) comprenaient 'épaule d'agneau, grillant
dans une poêle', entre autres.
Phil
It's inevitable that people look at us like a one-hit
wonder, because that's all they know of us. But Creep came along eight
years into our existence; we've always been progressing. I think The
Bends puts Creep in its proper place.
John Leckie
It was either going to be Sulk,
The Bends, Nice
Dream or Just. We had to give those
absolute "attention, make the amazing, instant smash hits number 1 in America".
Everyone was pulling their hair and saying, "It's not good enough! We were
trying too hard".
Ed
I think you're right, I think Fake Plastic Trees
and Street Spirit... I prefer these songs far more than Creep.
Creep was of its time but songs like that, [Fake Plastic Trees]
everytime we play it and Thom starts strumming on that acoustic and its like
voom! It hits you. It's a really powerful song.

If I could make a wish,
I think I'd pass.
Can't think of anything I need -
No cigarettes, no sleep, no light, no sound,
nothing to eat, no books to read.
Making love with you
has left me peaceful, warm, and tired.
What more could I ask?
There's nothing left to be desired.
Peace came upon me and it leaves me weak.
So sleep, silent angel, go to sleep.
Sometimes, all I need is the air that I breathe
and to love you.
All I need is the air that I breathe, yes,
to love you.
All I need is the air that I breathe.
Peace came upon me and it leaves me weak.
So sleep, silent angel, go to sleep.
